Meet the Staff

Jody Scott - Hygienist
I started with Dr. Willhide right out of high school as a dental assistant and worked part-time while attending dental hygiene school. After graduating from Northern Virginia’s dental hygiene program in 2000, I came on board full time as a dental hygienist. I am certified in laser dentistry and was one of the first dental hygienist in the state of Virginia to be certified to administer local anesthesia and nitrous oxide. I believe lifetime learning is fun and very important and have trained extensively with the Pride Institute of Practice Management. Our patients are like family and I am honored to be entrusted with their dental health. I am a North Carolinian at heart but have lived in Virginia for almost 25 years. I am married with two very active children. In my spare time I enjoy reading, going to the beach and hanging out on the field hockey or football fields cheering my children on to victory.

I graduated in 1986 from Stafford High School and was married in 1988.  In 1989,  I started dental assisting at a pediatric dental office, where I worked for three years.  After taking time off when I had my first child, I started missing the dental field and went back to work in a general dentist office for Dr. Willhide.  I worked in his office for 12 years, the last three as a financial coordinator.  In this position I received extensive training in Pride Marketing/Management and Dentrix software.  I volunteered at Northern VA Dental Clinics and spent time at my children’s school talking about brushing and flossing.  I was also registered with the state and certified in radiology.   A work opportunity took me to Moline, IL where I became co-founder/director and registrar of Dental Assisting Technologies, School of Dental Assisting where I taught.  I also worked in two dental offices where I received training is Cerec and Eaglesoft software.  I was certified with the state of Illinois and Iowa.  In 2015, family and grandbabies brought me back to Virginia where I was welcomed back to Dr. Willhide’s office with open arms.  Everyone that I cared for so much was still there.  I truly love what I do and dental assisting is my passion.  My goal is to implement dental knowledge to all my patients, making their experience the best it can be.

Debbie Shelby - Dental Assistant/Sleep Appliance Coordinator
I was born in Kentucky, and have lived in several states before coming to Virginia. I’ve always had an interest in the medical and dental fields, and have worked at a hospital in ER Admissions, Medical Records, and the Lab. I wanted to be more involved clinically, and working as a dental assistant for Dr. Willhide allows me to do that. I’ve been part of his team for over 10 years, and love what I’m doing! I get a great deal of satisfaction from educating our patients about their oral health, or the challenge I am provided with when on occasion, a patient may come in apprehensive or even fearful, and we are able to calm them down, reassure them, and have them smiling and laughing before long! We have a great team and great patients. I especially enjoy endodontics, and am involved with our Invisalign and Sleep Appliance cases as well. It is a wonderful feeling to know that we really do help make our patients’ lives better. Many people with Obstructive Sleep Apnea who are unable to wear or tolerate a CPAP machine have found relief and a welcome solution in the dental sleep appliances we prescribe. My husband Don and I have been married for 34 years and have two children and two grandchildren. In my free time, I enjoy church activities, the great outdoors, and spending time with my family.

Jo Ann worked for our office as appointment coordinator for over three decades.  We lost her this year and her smile and infectious laughter are greatly missed.  Our patients were like family to her, and she did her very best to provide the best experience and care possible to each one of them.  Jo Ann will forever remain in our hearts.

I couldn’t be more excited to have joined Dr. Willhide and his team at Heritage Dental. I started with him in April of 2018 as a Dental Assistant. I’ve enjoyed wearing many hats in the dental industry over the course of the past 11 years such as Front Desk, Financial Coordinator, Hygiene Assistant, Dental Assistant/IV sedation, Office Manager, and Marketing for practices. I’ve been looking for a place I could call my “home away from home,” and I’m certain that I’ve found it here. After only a few visits to the office, I knew I could call this team family. In my free time I enjoy reading, working-out, being outdoors, cooking and spending time with my husband, John, and our two children. Anything that’s rustic and Farmhouse or “do it yourself” (DIY) projects around the house are my favorite. I’m looking forward to the future with Dr. Willhide and his team and I’ve enjoyed getting to know our patients.

This year I joined Dr. Willhide and his fabulous team at Heritage Dental and couldn’t be happier. I was born and raised in Fredericksburg and graduated from Chancellor High School with a license in Cosmetology, my first love. After working in a salon for years and starting my own, I decided it was time for something new. I then discovered my new love for dentistry. Since then I have graduated from Germanna Community College as Certified Dental Assistant and have been in the dental field ever since. Over the years I have gained experience in all aspects of the dental field such as hygiene assisting, dental assisting, lV/ sedation dentistry, implant dentistry, front desk, scheduling coordinator to office manager. All positions have been extremely rewarding for me.

On my free time I spend time with my husband and three very active children. We share a love for all sports and enjoy being on the soccer fields with the kids on the weekends.
